Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about In Vitro Fertilization

How should I prepare for an IVF procedure?

Addressing all your concerns during the initial consultation is the best way to start preparing for your IVF procedure. All your questions should be answered by our Melbourne IVF fertility specialists. You will have to provide in detail your medical history and some factors that would affect your fertility including details about your sexual activities and history.

When you attend your initial appointment with a Melbourne IVF specialist,  they will also inform you of the following pre-procedural tests that you would need to undergo. These tests will dictate which way your IVF treatment would go or if IVF is the best fertility treatment to suit your needs.

  • Blood tests (Screening for complete blood count and infectious diseases like hepatitis, rubella, and HIV)
  • Pelvic ultrasound (Screening to know the status of your reproductive organs (uterus, ovaries, and fallopian tubes)
  • Ovarian Reserve Testing (screening to know the blood levels of hormones that affect your fertility)
  • Semen Analysis (test to check the semen quality and quantity of your partner)
How does IVF work?

An IVF treatment cycle follows 5 main steps. Below is the step-by-step guide to each stage so you can have a general overview of what really happens during an IVF treatment procedure at Melbourne IVF.

  • Ovulation induction: Normally, a woman’s ovaries produce one egg cell per menstrual cycle. During this phase, your ovaries will be stimulated to produce more eggs by administering hormonal injections. This step is essential so that more eggs will have the chance to get fertilized, improving your chances of becoming pregnant.
  • Egg retrieval: Once your Melbourne IVF specialist determines that your eggs are fully developed, your fertility specialist will carefully collect them using a probe attached to a transvaginal ultrasound. During the said procedure, you will be sedated so discomfort will be alleviated. You may feel mild abdominal cramps post-procedure but this will be addressed by prescribed pain relievers.
  • Sperm retrieval: While your eggs are being collected, your partner will also be asked to submit a fresh semen sample at the Melbourne IVF clinic. Providing the semen sample as soon as possible will ensure that fertilization may be initiated as soon as the eggs have been harvested.
  • Fertilization: The well-developed eggs are now exposed to the sperm cells from the semen sample taken from your partner. They are either incubated together (insemination) or undergo ICSI or Intracytoplasmic sperm injection, where a sperm is injected into one egg cell.
  • Embryo transfer: Once the fertilized egg, called embryo, is now ready and well-developed, it will be transferred to your uterus through a catheter that bypasses your cervix and carefully places the embryo/s to your uterus. The number of developed embryos to be transferred will depend on the treatment plan you and your fertility specialist have agreed upon.

Your pregnancy will be confirmed using a pregnancy blood test to be performed 2 weeks after the embryo transfer. For more details, you can always contact our Melbourne IVF clinic and book an appointment with our friendly fertility specialists.

What happens if my pregnancy test result after my IVF treatment procedure comes back negative?

If your pregnancy test is negative after your first IVF treatment, you have nothing to worry about. During the initial consultation, your Melbourne IVF specialist should have informed you that there is a study that shows first-time IVF treatments are more often unsuccessful not because you did something wrong, but because your body is still adjusting to the change. Discuss all your concerns with your Melbourne IVF specialists and they will gladly inform you of the next steps you both will take together.

What is Frozen Embryo Transfer (FET)?

During the fertilization phase of your IVF treatment cycle, more than one embryo will be fertilized depending on the quality and quantity of the sperm. If this happens and some of it will not be used or transferred, you and your Melbourne IVF specialist may opt to have them stored and frozen for future use. If by chance your previous IVF treatment cycle was unsuccessful, your frozen embryo may then be used to speed up and skip some steps in IVF such as the hormone injections and egg retrieval.

When it is time for you to try again and get pregnant the frozen embryo will be prepared and thawed so it would be ready for transfer to your uterus. You can contact Melbourne IVF if you want to know more about FET.
